63 Ford 2000

This guy I know has a problem with the tractor jerking in the rear end at a certain point of rotation. It is a 2000 4 cyl. diesel with 8 speed I haven't drove it, but the way he describes it, it sounds like a tooth missing on a gear somewhere. He said it is like it looses momentum at a certain point, then catches, being real ruff in all gears but 4th gear being the worst. He says it has a two speed lever under the seat. So I am guessing it is a rear mounted auxillary transmission. I remember some of you guys talking about a transmission of this sort, that you couldn't get parts for. I can't remember if it was a Hupp trans or what. Question is, what would be needed to take it out, if it is the problem or what could the problem be? Thanks

Matthew:

Hupp and Sherman auxiliary transmissions are mounted before the main transmission, the shifters are in front of the operator and any damage therein would affect operation of the tractor similarily regardless of which gear the main transmission is in.

Perhaps the tractor has a Howard or Everett rear mounted auxiliary transmission. Is anything mounted between the main transmission and the differential casting?

From the available information, the symptoms described could be caused by several issues.

Photos will be helpful.

Whatever he has, it's not a 4 cylinder 2000 with an 8 speed...
Mabey a 5 speed. Mabey with a Howard or Everett reduction box, but definitely not an '8 speed'.

Oops. I missed the 8 speed comment.
Of course it could be a 4 speed with a Sherman combo. Many owners of Sherman combos are unaware of the direct range.

post pics of the machine and shifting levers if you want help iding what he actually has.. past that.. wonder if it's a couple gear teeth missing on the individual tranny gears.. I think I'd pop a top and take a look and see what I could see.
