630 clutch

My John Deere 630 clutch will not stay engaged even after adjusting the clutch operating bolts. The clutch facings are somewhat wore would this be my problem?

Also check and see how far the clutch drive disc is drawn on there should be about an 1/8" sticking over the end of the crankshaft, I just worked on one that had a worn driver, it was flush with the crank and let to much pressure on the inner disc. The clutch dogs and toggles could be worn too.

Never heard of another one doing this, but back in the 80's when I was picking corn my 630 developed the same problem. Pulled the picker off the first time and replaced facings, adjusted and mounted the picker, but problem wasn't much better. Ended up removing the picker again and took the whole clutch assembly to Deere for rebuild. Replaced toggles, dogs, new bushings, new pin, and brazzed and redrilled the hole for the pin. New clutch, right? Guess what, Problem was still there. In 2nd gear it would go maybe 500 feet and disengage. Had my wife get on and drive while I walked beside and noticed the first reduction gear cover was broke behind where the fork slips in from the front. Just looked like a crack that opened up when the clutch was engaged. Otherwise not visible. Replaced the cover and it has worked like a new one ever since. Just something to check! Good Luck Don
