hey all I was wondering how hot the cutter bar should get on my discbine I change cutter bar oil
yearly and it seems like its too hot, after use usually warm to the touch, now I can barely touch it steam coming from the surface, did I put too much in, or not enough oil? please help its my only mower and I cant afford downtime, thanx in advance -Chris

That oil gets pretty toasty.More so if the level is low.Volume equals cooler oil.My hydroswing holds 25 gallons. But it will run on 5 gal.Check oil level.fill to specs.

Check you specs for capacity. Overfill can kill it! YOU NEED TO MEASURE THE AMOUNT WHEN FILLING.

You may need to drain and refill so you know how much is in the cutterbar. Read your operators manual....

OVERFILL CAN KILL ANY CUTTERBAR THAT I KNOW! The gears are such high speed they generate heat from pumping the oil around!

DR I think his moco is a JD 630 rotary. Too much oil in any rotary cutterbar is a NO-NO.

Your talking about your hydroswing which is a hydraulically driven sickle machine, I believe. Yes your tongue needs to be at the proper level to aid cooling.

Entire cutter bar hot or just around one hat? When a bearing is about to go bad, it'll get quite hot in its area.

As others have said, overfilling will cause it to roast and there's no way of knowing how much is in there. All you can do is drain it all out and start over. Make sure it all comes out; let it drain overnight while tilted towards the drain plug. Refill per the manual's specifications and see what happens. There might be a different (lower) volume for a refill compared to a new cutterbar; if so use the refill amount. If it gets hot again something more serious could be going on.

Hopefully you have not damaged anything (seals) but keep a watchful eye on the areas under the discs (turtles) for leaks.

Lubrication of rotary cutterbars is mostly by a mist of oil. Anything greater causes heating!
