I'll lead off with my question: can the pto sliding drive gear be replaced with just 1st gear reduction area access? I'm considering replacing the PTO crankshaft drive gear, idler gear and sliding drive gear. The noise is there with the sliding gear disengaged so it's mostly in the crankshaft PTO drive gear and idler but the sliding drive gear is also showing some wear. It looks like people have been trying to engage the sliding gear without killing the engine.
I'm all the way into the 630 1st reduction gears. I know the growl is not in the clutch pulley or the main. With the pulley off I re-installed the clutch driver disk, covered the fork mounting hole and ran it, growl still there. Removed reduction gear housing, removed the xmission drive gear and pto idler, re-installed the housing and clutch driver disk. She ran like a sewing machine, growl gone. It has to be a gear meshing issue. The PTO drive gear, idler, and sliding gear are showing some wear and idler bearings seem to be allowing too much play. I'm replacing the bearings. Also, I've made the following measurements with dial indicator: Crankshaft end play .010", Crankshaft left main bushing movement .004", Crankshaft right main (clutch side) bushing movement .011".
Thanks for your inputs.
