630 rhythmic growl

I recently bought a 630 that runs well with no visible oil leaks. Changed the 1st reduction gear oil. No shavings and the oil quantity was perfect. The hydraulic system, transmission, pto, and 1st reduction all have correct oil levels. So I don't think any internal seals or engine maiin seals are leaking. But I do notice a growl that has a definite rhythm to it. Seems to be on the clutch side with the clutch engaged or disengaged. Any ideas what might be causing it.

Doesn't go away when the PTO is disengaged. It's there when in neutral with clutch engaged or disengaged. I'll work on posting a video.

Here's a short clip. The clutch grabs and is jerky. I can lift on the clutch pulley and watch it move up and down. Is the clutch bearing bad, needs lubrication, or both? I just opened this file and no sound. When I tried to upload the video I kept getting file too large messages. Sorry.

If clutch moves up and down, it's time for a new bearing and a look see at all the other wear parts of your clutch. I just rebuild the clutch on my 80 that was "wobbling" and making a "clanking noise". Bearing was bad and had to have a new bushing for drive pin machined into clutch with a new drive pin. Made a world of difference!! You may need a new bushing also! Let's hope not!!$$$$$

You're right I need to get into it. I'd like to work the tractor for an hour or so to see if anything else may need work. Would that be too risky with the possible clutch problems?

Seems like it has to be in the clutch or something in the 1st gear reduction gearing. Engine main noise would be constant I think.

My plan is to take the clutch pulley completely off, put the clutch driver disk back on, start the engine and see if it goes away. Any problems with doing that?

I'll try moving the crank when I get the pulley off. I considered the crank main but I don't know why that wouldn't be a constant noise. Hope it doesn't move. It'll be a couple weeks before I can get into it that far but I'll post back. Thanks for the inputs and comments.

I'm thinking it's not the pulley bearing. That would stop with clutch engaged.

I agree. The noise volume inreases and decreases regularly and the frequency depends upon engine RPM. Sounds like something wobbling agains a shield or something oblong rubbing against something.

Well, having this new information (Changes with RPM changes) which wasn't stated in original post makes it more of an engine issue it seems. The governor may be another place to look. If memory serves me, the bearings on those governors get oiled by chance, When I took my 48' "A" apart years ago, the bearing behind pressure gauge port was (what thought) very dry. Have you pulled off flywheel cover and checked behind that? It's kind of hard to diagnose not being there! Good luck you'll find the cause by accident or chance!! :)
