630 Rollamatic Spindle

I am working on the front wheel bearings on a rollamatic
630. I discovered that the threads on one of my spindles
are damaged to the point the castle nut will not stay
tight.



I was reading last night about the universal lock
nuts/swagger nuts. I see I can buy them on a few tractor
parts sites. I have never seen or used one before, and
have a couple questions if I use one.



First, do I need to use the little key that comes with the
nut? Do I still use the thrust washer that goes between
the bearing and the original castle nut? Once I have the
universal lock nut on and tight, is there a need for the
original castle nut and a cotter pin?



I do have a die that will probably work on the threads of
the spindle, but dont want to try that route in case I do
more harm than good.

You might want to search for a replacement spindle. Used Roll-A-Matic front ends used to sell for around $150. I doubt you could have a machine shop repair the thread for less than that.

One of my Deeres has an aftermarket spindle nut that allows you to clamp the nut to the spindle. I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to. That nut was on there when the tractor came to the farm 45 years ago. It's been a few years since I've had my hands on that nut, and I don't remember the little key that you mentioned. Thrust washer yes, cottor pin, yes, old castle nut, no.

Maybe that little key is a allen wrench.

Not too long ago, I bought a complete Roll-O-Matic spindle extension for $300. Not sure where you are located. I just saw that Wengers of Myerstown, PA (717) 866-8424 has a left and right spindle for sale at $150 each. They were advertised under the JD 70 Diesel parts list.
