my 630 is in dire need of a clutch. for quite a while pretty much since ive had it quite a growl from trans I expect or re. sounds like a gear growl any ideas. it has been worked hard in the past.

my 530 was the similar,(188 diesel triple range) if the rpm was low it would growl real bad when I pushed in the clutch. it sounded ok at a reasonable rpm when the clutch was pushed in. it had me worried and now I have it all tore down thinking I would find a smoking gun. bad throw out bearing or something. but it all looks real good. I am replacing the throw out bearing for good measure but I wonder what the noise was for sure. I even thought maybe internal to the engine as the thrust bearings on #3 take up that thrust when the clutch is pushed in and mayhap the oil pressure being low at idle could let it rub? but it looked great too. just a little silver rubbed off like you would expect on a high hour engine. I replaced all the mains and rods during the engine rebuild any way. I guess all you can do is split the tractor and replace the clutch. or run it until it ruins something and breaks down in the field and the clutch locks up or slips or disintegrates and locks up the engine......

I had the same problem with our 430. Turned out to be a bad pressure plate, now it's quiet as a mouse. Don

If your gear growl is getting louder over time and louder is not your immigration, a gear set is probably self-destructing. If the growl has been consistent over the years, the gear was probably out of tolerance and noisy from the factory. Noisy does not necessarily mean the gear has a short life. Dad's old C Case had 3rd gear growl for 60+ years. Cat gears were often allowed to growl because other noise would cover up the noise.

The out of tolerance will not be detected by visual inspection. Spur gear growl or whine is usually caused by insufficient "tip clearance" for it to run quiet but it usually still will have good durability. 5th gear in my 1170 has a slight whine for 40+ years so far.

If the OD of a gear blank is machined too large, usually it will have insufficient tip clearance. Typically, gear sets in older farm tractors were not checked for noise before assembly or before shipping the tractor. Typically, the farmer either complained loud enough for the dealer to replace the set or accepted the noise---- and perhaps was more carefull about the color of his next tractor. LOL

Not a CASE, but we had a horrible growl in an ALLIS 180 tranny that turned out to be a bad bearing on one of the shafts ??

thanks for all the replies. I hope soon to be able to get the clutch and pp done may need it this summer however would like to get 430 diesel running first.
