64 drill part update

I had ordered a manual for that 64 drill from the Floyd County Museum before Richard managed to find the original. It came today. The original didn't have a chart in it,the reproduction does, seed, fertilizer and grass seed,so that problem is solved.

The new manual has a parts book with it too. It says there are two different sprockets. There's a 13 tooth for one with 20 inch tires and a 9 tooth for one with 15 inch tires. That's gonna narrow the search because apparently I'll need one from a drill with 20 inch tires like mine has. The part number's a little different in the book than what's stamped in to it. It says it's 340-036 B.

Is the part number embossed into the part, if yes, it might be the number for the casting before it is machined into the finished part.

Randy: The model 64 drill was a product of the Springfield Ohio plant. During production of the drill the Springfield plant was closed and production was moved to South Bend. Each plant had there own set of part numbers.

The one I've got has 20 inch wheels.....just not sure yet if it will come off in one piece ...it's been setting for at least thirty years.

The part number and the number in the casting are the same, the letter at the end is different is all. The casting number ends in C,the part number ends in B.

Is there a good tire on it? One of mine is shot. I worked half a day yesterday getting it off that split rim. Had to cut it off with the reciprocating saw finally. I don't know where I'm going to find a 7.50 20 to put back on it.

Pretty sure that was a size used on some of the JD 8000 series drills so maybe a parts yard might be able to help.

I could buy a new American Farmer implement tire for $160. I just brought a 8.25 up from the boneyard that holds air. I don't think it's a whole lot bigger. Trouble is,that one's a split rim too,so it might be a bugger to get off in one piece. Putting an old tire back on a split rim doesn't thrill the heck out of me. Sounds like a double deadly danger.

Got it off this morning....come off easier than I thought it would...... so if you find another one you can still have this one for a spare I have no use for it....

Thanks a million Claud. I'll stop looking. Has John said anymore about going to Cracker Barrel? If you're going,I can get it from you there. I called Hofferbert's this morning. Shawne wasn't there,Bruce said he'd do some checking, but he didn't sound optimistic about having one.

If you get back to the woods again, could you see if you can get a couple of those seed boots off the bottom of the box? The ones that the rubber seed and fertilizer tube hooks to. One of the hoses bounded off on the way home and the metal boot wasn't in great shape. The rest look good, but I could use at least one,and it wouldn't hurt to have a few extras just incase.

John had something a month or so ago about getting together, but he said he had to put a new water softener or something in first.

I checked my 8300 down in the shed and it is 7.50 X 20 on a 6 lug rim. Perhaps upon checking the lug spacing and pilot hole maybe the whole wheel might interchange then you don't have to play with the split rim.

The Oliver drill's 8 bolt, same as most implements that use a 20 inch wheel. The dish is shallower though so none of the common 8 bolt wheels will work. I have a pair of 8.25s on 6 bolt split rims off a green and yellow 33 manure spreader. I got the tire off one today, but the tube was cracked and leaking near the valve stem,so I have to get a new tube before I can put it together.
