641 Engine Noise

I bought a 641 a while back with the intention of eventually restoring it. But it's in decent running condition so we used it to plow some river bottom for a food plot. It pulled the plow fine and ran good but there is a loud rattling sound in the lower front of the engine that worries me. I'm thinking it's the timing gear because with the generator/water pump belt off it's still there. I did tighten the bolt in the front of the pully but that didn't seem to make any difference in the noise. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

Billy,

You might try to take stethescope or wooden dowel to your ear and isolate the sound. If is is truly in the front of the engine it could be the governor or if it's a little further back, the pick-up tube on the oil pump. Hope this helps.
