641 Generator Smoking

I ran my tractor for about an hour tonight...the generator starting smoking and smelling like something was burning. Any ideas?

would guess the regulator is bad and the genny is charging full out and burning up the armature. It is not uncommon to " throw the solder out" or throw the lead out" as the old timers used to say from over charging the genny and melting the solder where the wires hook to the commutator. Thats why lot of regualtors had over current relays to prevent them from exceeding their design max charge.. over charging current can be from bad req and a shorted battery.

Then again maybe a field coil decided to short.
