641 Motor Oil

I have a 1963 Ford 641 4 cyl. gas tractor. Can someone please tell me theoil to use. Is it SAEW 30 detergent or non detegent ?

I use a regular 30 wt mineral based oil. Detergent is fine.
Some use Rotella 15-40 (like they use in their diesel tractors.)

I use 10-30 on mine. I've used 10-40 on it before. I don't use the non-detergent in it. Previous owner had apparently, and so the first fill I did with detergent oil cause a good bit of stuff to break free, dirtying the oil. But after a couple of changes the oil doesn't dirty nearly as fast.

Feel free to search through the archives for some 'spirited' discussion on detergent vs non-detergent oil. But generally speaking 10-30 or 10-40 should be fine.

You sure on that year I think 62 was the last year for them. As for oil now days pretty much any brand of oil and all is just fine. O'Reilly's brand as well as Wal-Mart oil and both made by Valvoline. My self I use 30W oil in most of my stuff but only gets run in the summer for that that does get run year round I use a 20W-50 O'Reilly's brand oil

I use a 15w40 oil in pretty much all my tractors now.

58-62 was 01 series ( year model ). does the model ID show 641?

late 62 was the 000 series.. sn started with 1001

non detergent does not have additives to prevent piston coking.
non detergent does not have additves to prevent liner scuffing.
non detergent does not have additives to prevent cam wear and follower wear.
non detergent does not have additives to prevent waxing and sludge.
non detergent does not have the shear protection of viscosity change additives.
non detergent does not have the extreame wear additives like moly that only work when a part gets extreamly hot.
non detergent does not have the acid fighting additives that help when vehicles sit for long times with moisture in the air that forms acids.
non detergent does not meet the "cling" specification where the lubricant must cling to a part after sitting for long periods so you dont have dry starts which cause heavy cam wear.

used to be that a hd diesel was was the best oil money could buy as it has ALL of the additives and the better base oil for most any engine made, so thats why most folks recommend it for gas and diesel engines. Or buy the cheap stuff and rebuild the engine more often.

It has the # 641 stamped in the flat spot on the left side of the motor. It's possible it could be a 62.

Thanks for everyones help. I went with SAE 30 detergent. I did find out something though...A Wix # 51515 is the same as a Ford FL1A ..filter speaking....Thanks again

not the oil i would have chosen.. but your call.

that wix filter also is = to 100 other filters. napa 1515.. though that is not the best cross.. a 1452 is MUCH better.
