641 snowplow question

I have an older Snoway plow that is 7'6" and I am considering attaching it to my 641. I was wondering if I can bolt it onto the axle, or would it put too much stress on the axle? I have seen other front mounted plows bolted to the axle without any problem, but I just want to make sure.

THANKS

Front axle or rear axle?

The front axle is one of the weakest parts of that tractor. Pushing heavy snow with the plow bolted to that axle will surely cause problems. All plows I have seen for that series have a frame that either goes all of the way back to the rear axle or to the large attachment bolt holes on the bottom of the transmission. The ones with the hydraulic lift cylinder have a subframe that mounts the lift cylinder to the front bolster or front axle, but that doesn't take the brunt of the force when pushing snow.

Front axle. The plow came off an old chevy blazer and I have the subframe for it, just trying to find out the best way to mount it so I don't bend or break something.

I should also note that I have the front crossbar from my fel that bolts on the underside front of the engine, but I have a concern as I am getting oil leakage around there and didn't want to make it worse, which is why the fel is not currently on the tractor.

Pushing off the front axle would be a bad
idea. It is not built for those kinds of
loads. Take a look at an OEM plow.
Those pushed for the bolts under the bottom
of the transmission. Yes, like a loader,
they do bolt on under the front axle but
that is only for lifting - which the axle
WAS designed to take.

My fel frame goes to the rear axle, as well as the front.

Thank you for the advice and info. I will fabricate a mounting bracket that will bolt on underneath.

Thanks for all the info. I'm glad I asked.

I built one for my super 55 Oliver that had two 2 inch square tubes going back to the rear axles. That part worked good. My mistake was when I mounted a cylinder to the front noise of the tractor for lifting and I also had down pressure. It worked great for about five years. Then one cold day I was out pushing snow and hit a crack in the drive way. I hit it perfectly square. It broke the frame that the engine was mounted in. In hind site, the cylinder had a lot of leverage on the frame. I would not make one again with out a full frame to take the pressure off the frame of the tractor. I have a future project to do so, since that blade was very handy year around.

BBQCHEF here are some pictures of a bracket that I fabricated for my NAA, it should be real close to your 641. It mounts on the front under the
engine and attaches to the swinging drawbar bracket in the back. I used a trailer hitch insert to attach to the swinging drawbar bracket, it fits in
there perfect. I used 2x2 1/8" wall square tube and 3/8 plate where the plow mounts. I use a 6' Meyers plow with power angle. With loaded tires
and chains that little tractor can move some snow.

One more photo. I haven't put the plow on yet, haven't needed it. So far this winter we've got about 3" of snow in North East Ohio.

Jeffkoh,

Thanks for the photos. I had already though of something similar to that. But having some pics, will be nice. I will have to extend mine forward just a bit more though, from what I remember, it angles pretty good and I want to make sure it clears the tires. I am in the U.P. now and have about 2 feet so far. I have chains, but not loaded, and no weights. I have been able to pile it up about 4 feet high with just the back scraper blade, but getting tired of plowing in reverse, well my back and neck are anyway.

Thanks again for the photos.

here is a photo of my plow bracket on the 631 I had sold tractor but kept plow and I have it on my '64 4000 but no pics of it

Mine has 3 connecting points with all of the hydraulics forward of the connections. So I am thinking I will have to have it forward enough so those connects are easy to get to.

If I were to build one I would make the frame as close to the original plow frame as possible and hang it off the axle
carrier, instead the axle, and either to a cross piece using the 2 holes under the transmission or back to sway bar
brackets under the back axle.

Here are the original frames that would have been for your tractor. I would build something along this basic design.

Thanks kirk.

I looked underneath today while I was taking measurments and noticed some red colored plugs in the 2 holes under the tran. Is that original? And does anyone know the size and thread?

Probably cork plug in there to keep the threads in good shape. 5/8 course thread. Stick something in the hole to
measure depth. I think I used 2" long bolts with lock washer.
