641 Wheel Stud Replacement

Rookie question of the day Is there any trick to installing
a new wheel stud on the rear axle of a 641? Looks like
the axle shaft needs to be pulled. Might explain why dad
never replaced the broken one for 40 years.

So, yes, there is a hole. But how does that help or work?
There does not seem to be any place where the stud can
gain clearance to be installed from the back. What am I
missing? Guess its time to read the service manual!

So You need to either drill a hole in the backing plate (early S/Ns) or punch out a knockout plug. Easy peasy!

The best solution is to remove the axle so that you can renew the seals and repack the axle bearing while disassembled.

The axle bearing almost certainly has not been preacked for decades.
