6410 battery question

Checking on a new battery for my 6410.John Deere wants 400 bucks for a battery with 1150 cold cranking amps.I tried napa and a local battery shop and no one has anything close.Anyone know of anything else that will work?

I had a 6410. Battery went bad. Only place I could find one was at a John Deere dealership. That was 5 or 6 years ago.

thats alotta cca i see battery plus highest is 925cca for bigger tractors up to 9420 -- why does 6410 take so much ??if you google JD 6410 battery they all show 850 cca -- tractor data says same 850cca

Measure the battery box. Go to Napa and find the highest CCA battery that will fit in there.
Use a block heater instead of extended cranking in cold weather.

The napa battery is an inch to wide to fit.Guess JD made it that way so you have to buy there's.I tried an 850 CC battery.It doesn't start as well even in the summer.

That link doesn't work,but the original battery is 1150 CCa. That's the one JD sells.The earlier 6400 used a smaller battery.

You want to be REAL careful putting any Brand X battery in that tractor due to venting issues. Obviously with the battery directly in front of the coolers and radiators, corrosion on the battery terminals and gases from the battery getting sucked back into the cooling package is a real possibility, and it's possible for said corrosion to do a number on the coolers and radiator and cause big problems down the road. Going with a smaller CCA battery obviously means the battery is going to be drawn down more at every startup and is going to be being charged at a higher rate post startup and will gas more. Deere itself had some issues with that sort of thing years ago, although I don't remember the specifics, but I can remember working on a 6000 or small-frame 7000 with cooler corrosion issues. I just worked on a 6400 a few weeks back, and I'm trying to think about how much space is available there and the possibility of maybe putting two small 12-volts up there connected in parallel, but of course then you're going to be buying two batteries, cables, etc. My guess is that your tractor is MFWD, which of course eliminates the possibility of hanging a battery box on the frame rail with a couple of cheaper 12-volts in it. That's quality German engineering, right there, and one of the reason we call them Mannheim Masterpieces...

Check into a battery for a "1st Generation" Dodge Cummins pickup, i.e. 1989 to 1993. They have a single battery and it seems to me that they're around 1000 CCA. I know they're at least 950 and I think there's enough room in that 6400 for one to fit. I think you mentioned hard-starting issues even in the summer with 850 CCA, which should definitely not be the case if everything else is up to snuff, i.e. good battery, good cables, etc. If your 6400 is running the original cables, that could be a big part of your problem. With good cables and connections and a full charge, the Dodge battery I mentioned should crank that engine with ease down to 0 degrees or colder. I had a '92 Dodge Cummins that would start at -20 without being plugged in when the truck and battery were 3 years old.

I just put a new battery in my 6400, and the price JD wanted for the correct replacement was unreal. I bought a large plastic box that would fit into the front area, and got a battery that was a bit smaller than the OEM repalcement that had a few less CCA's, and replaced it the last time with the smaller battery. It's more on the lines of a 24 series in size, but works fine. A decent JD battery will still hold up for 5 years, and is a good deal cheaper than the larger battery, yet half the cost. The plastic box also seems to keep the area cleaner, and will catch any overflow and crud from the battery top. It also makes for easy removal of the battery for maintenance.

Thanks, guys.I ended up with an interstate battery,950 CCA that fit in the same hole.I had to drill new holes for the battery hold down J bolts cause the new battery was taller.It cost 149 bucks.Model 31p mhd.
