644a injector with soot around it

While running my 644a today equipped with a 60s vintage 6-404
diesel I saw some soot around the #3 injector. Upon closer
inspection. I could see the injector moving with each compression
stroke. I?ve never pulled this type of injector before... my 3020 and
2955 are/were pencil style injectors that used a bolted hold down.

Anyone have any insight on how these 6-404 injectors are
assembled and how one would come to allow blow-by from the
cylinder?

Very early injectors used a forked bar and a bolt in the center to hold the injector down in the head. The late injectors from Bosch and Denso have a twelve point nut that threads into the head, holding the injector down.

If tightening nut(key 2) doesn't stop soot/inj movement then inj will need to be removed,bore in cyl head cleaned & new sealing washer(key 12) installed.

The gland nut that holds the injector in the head has worked loose. The injector body is sealed to the head with a copper washer. The nut being loose allows compression to leak past the copper washer. You might get by with tightening the gland nut. If not, remove the injector and clean the bore then install with a new washer.

If is the early model Bosch injector with twelve-point gland nut; there is a special tool to use; a OTC- JDE-96A crows foot 1/2 inch drive to tighten and torque nozzle to 35-45 ft lbs.. If tighting seals things--great; if not, need to pull; clean -- new copper washer on bottom....

Is the special tool a must for this job? Is it possible to get a 12 point crows foot in the right size to get this done? Anyone know offhand what size it is?

I can?t find any mention of the special tool OTC- JDE-96A online... something the dealer has perhaps? Of course this injector is the only one completely blocked by the oil cooler so that will make it even more fun to get to.

Doing this outside in the Maine winter isn?t the most fun way to do about this project!

Yes, a special tool for the KDL Bosch nozzles. I have the tool. I use to work at a John Deere dealership.
I do not need this tool anymore, I would sell... If interested, give me your email and I will send you a picture. It is a JDE-69A OTC.. I had said before a 96; I was wrong..
