65 multi power questions

Hello, bought a diesel 65 with multi-power a while back. been setting for years. Cleaned fuel system and bled out to the pump and it runs well it would seem. Has MP lever on dash but is missing linkage on top of clutch housing. Believe it to be in low range as it free wheels when going down hill. I suspect there were issues and they removed the linkage. Would a failed MP continue to work in low? Came from flat farm country so may not have been a big concern for prior owner. Any damage done from moving the rod sticking up with a pair of pliers to test it? Will this affect any thing else with the tractor (pto, three point etc)? Thanks, Mike

The LOW MP is a jaw clutch that I've never seen fail like over running roller one way clutches can. Move the rod DOWN will put the MP in HIGH IF it is still working. If not it will run for years in LOW range fine.

Low Multi-Power is completely mechanical. It drives thru an over-running clutch. That is why they free wheel in low and will continue to work even if the high side doesn't. High M-P is engaged with a hydraulically activated clutch pac. The hydraulic pressure for that is provided by a second pump that is mounted on top of the 3ph pump. The PTO on a 65 is also completely mechanical. M-P has no affect on the PTO or 3ph on that tractor. It shouldn't hurt anything to pull up on the rod that is sticking out of the clutch housing

Thanks for the info guys, lever does not seem like it wants to move so I will leave it alone and use the tractor in low range. After putting the hydraulic tube in the transmission, topping off fluids and replacing valve stem cores in the rear tires I put the back blade on and worked on the driveway for an hour. Need to work on some leaks but it seems to start easy and run well, power steering works great Thanks again for the info, Mike
