656 Draft control

Question about the draft control on my 656...my draft control lever does not stay in the Light position, but returns to the mid range of Draft selection. I can move the Draft lever to Light and it will raise the hitch, but if I release my grip it will return to the mid-range. What is my issue and how can I fix this so the lever will stay in the Light range so my hitch will stay at its highest? Side note: From what people are telling me, I have an original 2pt/fast hitch that someone converted to a non-factory 3pt hitch on my recenlty bought 656 Hydro.

Yes,that is a nonstock conversion from original fast hitch.Looks to be well made.Modeled after the original OEM.Run it,enjoy it,don't worry that it's not 'factory'.Never seen one like it.
Don't know if it was made in an 'aftermarket factory,or someone's farm shop.Doesn't matter as long as it works.

It is well made! I do wish the sway bars were adjustable as I can not put my post hole auger on it. And I would like the lower arms to have the latch to eliminate the need to jockey 3pt equipment around. But how can I get the two arms to lift higher? Why is the Draft lever wanting to stay in the middle of the Heavy-Light?

Parts from 51 through 58 are friction related position holding parts for the levers. There is a serial number break, so this is one of 2 options. Jim

If you unpin The stops and mount the post hole digger. Also there are quick hitches that will go on thyour arms and then you open latches backup and lift to connect to hitch then close latches and ready minus hooking up PTO. This would work better for implements like chisel plows and plows or planters.

Both lift links appear to have screw adjustments. If they are adjusted as short as possible, the clevises on their lower end could be shortened to accomplish that. Movint their attachment point closer to the tractor would also work. Some geometry analysis would be needed to do that. Jim

You can make em adjustable by useing square tubeing on one end of the link. Make a sheeve saaembly that will slide in or out..However,adjustable are not needed. The desicn takes care of itself,irregardless of implement hitch width. Have some slop/flexibility would help in hooking up an implement,though.You can also 'reclock' the rockshaft arms on the rockshaft. Just remove the bolt holding the arms on,and slide the arms off,rotateing them a few notches.I seem to remember 4 notches is the difference between 2 point or three point. The arms and rockshaft should be marked.

The friction disk and or spring is worn. Sometimes just tightening the tension will do the trick.

Are you using the controls as they are designed? On IH, you can leave draft set to heavy and forget it, if you want (not the best use of features available) The position lever (nearest to you) is the one you need for basic tractoring. Growing up, our big tractor's draft lever got rusted in place...the grown ups liked to plow deep.

Despite my questioning you, Sounds like you need new friction parts (after a certain serial number you just tighten a pinch bolt) and to re adjust and resynchronize the linkages. I&t manual pretty good for that.
I believe the draft all the way to light can add to raise height in some situations, but it isn't meant for that or indicates a misadjustment. Seeing you have a originally fasthitch tractor, you should look into
The clocking of the lift arms on your rock shaft. Again, i&t manual shows this and the difference fh and 3 point pretty well. Fh and 3point are a spline or two different. I would follow the 3 point adjustment specs from now on, unless you see a major difference in the parts.

We have a 656 with original 3 point. The adjustable link rods are pinned direct to the draw arms instead of that bolted truss. Also by eyeball and memory, the adjustable link rods look longer on this former fh tractor. Our 656 is a Farmall, too. Time in the salvage yard could find shorter adjustment rod assemblies, utility ones are shortest, but may work ok with the bolted plates and fh rockshaft clocking. Bring a tape measure with you when visiting other tractors.
