So i need some advice. I have a 656 gas that needs rebuilt and my dad and i agree that we want to keep it and rebuild it. So i wanted to ask if anyone has done the engine rebuild on one and if so, are there any tips/suggestions about how to get it done, what overhaul kit to buy, etc?
Thanks,
Mike

first thing you need to decide if you are doing an in frame, or if you are going to split the tractor and do a full overhaul. if the main and rod bearing are worn, you need to have the crank reground, so you will be splitting the tractor to get the crank out. this site sells the tisco kits for the 656, figure anywhere from 500 to 800 for the kit plus bearings. pick up a shop manual for your tractor, the i and t manual isnt a bad manual as long as you kind of know your way around the motor. the kits come usually complete less bearings, but it has pistons, sleeves, gaskets, rings ect. if you are going to go full boat on the overhaul, send the head out for a valve job, also send the crank shaft and block out to be checked. with the labor and cost for a major, i try not to cut any corners. before you start working on it, pressure wash and degrease the tractor as muck as you can, its a lot easier working on a clean one as opposed to one covered in dirt and grease.
