656 hydro no reverse

After getting my 656 going. I have eliminated all but one very important issue. It won't go backwards. Goes forward great. Pulled a 2 bottom plow quite nicely. But if you put it in reverse, it will act like it wants to back up but it won't go. I have purchased the manual for the 656 hydro transmission. But this really isn't my wheelhouse. I changed the fluid and filter. What should I check next?

One simple thing you can try is to push the lever out further as you put it in reverse. The side to
side position is very important to proper operation. Sometimes the housing will get out of whack
and not allow it in reverse.

If you have the proper transmission manual it will take some time to digest the information along
with advice from here but it is very helpful.

I think (but do not know for sure) that there are two check valves, one for forward, and one for reverse. They are accessible from the outside.
swapping them will make it go backwards, but not forwards. If so the valve is bad. Jim

Lucky U! The easiest hydro's to fix are the ones that won't move. Rather than all the troubleshooting book recommends, R&R and check few/rev relief valves, fwd and rev check valves, and shuttle spool. You'll find the culprit and results won't make sense but tractor will be fixed.

Thanks for the replies! I swapped the check valves to no avail. Tried moving the lever side to side. No movement. I'm wondering how to check my relief valves as my book says that swapping them won't do any good.

Hey there Andrew! I have the same transmission in a 3600A tractor that uses the 656 transmission. You describe the problem EXACTLY the same as what i'm experiencing. Were you able to get this resolved?

Thanks!
