656 Hydro PTO

Hi guys,
I was looking through the specs for my 656 on the external_link site a while ago and noticed that they list the 656 Farmall with a 540/1000 PTO. How do I know which I have on my tractor and how do you switch from one to the other? I was thinking of buying an older round baler like a JD 510 or Vermeer 605 and now I'm wondering how I know if I have the right PTO to run those pieces of machinery. Appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

Think perhaps there might be a misprint there?

Maybe one could order the 1,000 PTO on a 656 from the factory, but sure haven't ever seen one.

Generally, the fine-splined 1,000 PTOs were used in the higher horsepower tractors.

Kinda think you have a 540.

The 656"s that I have seen have all been 540. But I havent seen them all

You could get either one but you cannot switch back an forth with out changing the internal pto drive gears up front. Major job. The 1000 rpm of course will have the fine splined shaft and 540 the much courser spline (fewer).
