656 update

Working on the 656 hydro now and I've drained the oil but I'm confused on where the L shaped plate is that I'm supposed to go through to find the relief valves. There's a big L shaped plate under the tractor where the drain plug is but that's it. They said its on the right side but I don't see one. If some one could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it!

I do not know which side is forward/backward, but the check valve is above the relief valve and the only way I know to get to them is remove hydraulic pump/plate on the right side of the tractor, or the angled rectangular plate on the left side. My tractor is a Farmall 656 the International 656 may be different.

You can get replacement parts from Herrs machine in Washington KS, ask for Raleigh, they are a great company and I got a rebuilt relief valve for ~$60.00

If it has power in reverse but will not move forward, then you are looking for the forward check valve. (but like john said earlier it could be external of the transmission in the drive control valve (valve controlled by the lever on left side of tractor).

I looked at my tractor today and its not exactly L shaped, its a large rectangular plate with a smaller rectangle jutting out of the top left. Its the plate that the pump hides behind, it has a rubber hose and a steel line coming out of the plate, on the right side of the tractor right in front if the cylinder looking filter housing. Remove the lines attached to the plate, then remove the plate by taking out the bolts around the perimeter of the plate. The pump comes out with the plate, its a litte heavy. After the plate is out there is a bolt head, about 1 1/8" in the upper left corner. Take that bolt out and behind it is the check valve. The inside of the check valve is threaded to accept a 1/2" coarse thread bolt. Thread a bolt in the check valve so you can pull it out.

A note, the relief valves are different than the check valves. There is a forward and reverse of each, but the book, and also what i read on this forum, say if a relief valve fails you will have limited power in both directions. If a check valve fails, you will only lose power for the direction of the failed check valve. If the forward check valve goes out, you cant drive forward, and if the reverse check valve goes out you cannot move in reverse. The forward check valve is on the right side of the tractor and the reverse check valve is on the left side of the tractor.
