656 Wide Front End

Now that I have the hydraulics sorted out I want to work on the front end. The ball joints on the tie-rods are way beyond shot. Is the dealer the only source for them or is there an equivalent that would be less expensive? The dealer told me they could only get them as a complete tie-rod assembly.

good question I been wondering the same thing on my 70 Hydro. should be the same part # maybe someone will know the answer.

It depends on how those tie rods and tie rod ends are made. Some tie rods are built so the just the end, or ball joint is replaceable, and on others the tie rod end is an integral part of the tie rod itself, and you have no choice but to replace the assembly. Your dealer is NOT the only source.

Outer tie rods are something like $29 at any dealer or vender. Inners aren't much worse. Common as hen's teeth.

Be sure and get the long ones if you plan on spreadin' 'er out. Somebody cheated me on these. :>(

Also, you might want to look at that center pivot. They wear over time and need the pin/bushings tended to.

There are several companies that specialize in just IH salvaged parts. Try Bates Corp. 800.248.2955. They have helped me several times. They are in Indiana.

Our local dealer gets a lot of stuff from Hy-Capacity that is a good replacement for IH parts at a lower cost. Don't know for sure if they have tie rod ends or not...

Just about any way you can make it work.

Those badly stuck ones, I use pure brute power and pull 'em apart with two other tractors.

Lessor stuck units, a man can get away with penetrating oil, heat and a big hammer.

Heard of fellas loosening the bolts and driving them around for a week with just the pins holding the pipes. The "jarring" seems to help break 'em loose.

Once they are loose tho, I really grease and lube 'em up so it won't happen again.

I think you've had plenty answers on locating tie rods. But just to throw my .02 in I have replaced several outers by reusing a tie rod end from an automotive appl not worn to much for the tractor and cut and weld.

Allan,

I went back to the dealer today to try to buy just the rod ends. We found the ones I need listed under the "Farmall" J-20 section of the CASEIH parts catalog.

The outboard ones are $68.00 and the inboards are $48.00 a piece. If you guys can clue me in where you are getting them so cheap I would appreciate it!

Thanks,

Joe
