No two user installs are alike, so there is no way to answer the question. Here is a diagnostic answer. Remove the wire from the #1 terminal. (excite wire) find the wire attached to the ignition (might be the switch end of the ignition resistor, or if no resistor, the ignition switch side of the coil (which should be the positive terminal on a negitive ground system). Use an ohm meter to find out if it conducts electricity. it should going toward the alternator, and not going from the alternator to the ign. If no joy, Strip the wire out of what ever it is in, from end to end. The diode shoild be in there. If not it need one, or a clearance light, or a 10 ohm resistor. Jim
 
First we need to know if it is a generator to alternator conversion. Some later model 656s came from the factory with a Delco 10DN alternator which uses an external regulator. This is a whole different kettle of fish then what Jim has covered. The attached link shows you what the small wire plug would look like on one of these.
