660 generator. Which one?

I have a 660 here that used to be my grandpas. Currently it has a GM alternator that will be removed when I get around to painting it. When we cleaned out Grandpas barn I found the generator I remember being on the tractor when I was a kid (the black one in the photo). My dad claims that is the wrong generator and it should have a shorter one like you see on an letter series John Deere. I never really looked into it until this weekend I was looking at a restored 660 and it had the Deere looking generator on it. So which is the correct one? I ve included pictures of both, it just has me curious. It’s a later keystone 660 if that makes a difference.

You need a 12 volt 2 brush generator. The green generator is incorrect. I can get you the correct Deldo number Monday or Tuesday. More questions?

I m in no hurry any help is really appreciated. I picked up a service manual and owners manual but I see I will need a parts manual in the near future as well.

If you are willing to answer 660 questions I have a few more.

Is the rear side tin the same between the 660 and Super 66? I always thought they were but want someone that knows more than me to verify.

This tractor is a wide front and the tie rods are in bad shape. One is poorly home made and the other has been welded together, crooked. 660 tie rods are not for sale anywhere that I have found yet. I know the tube/shaft diameter are smaller than on a 770/880 but when I measured the shank size it was the same as the 770 next to it. Know of any reason I can t put 770 tie rods on it? I know they are bigger but at least they are available.

This one also has a 3pt on it. It is missing one of the cast brackets that the sway chains attach to. Any idea on where to find one or am I better off having the local machine shop make me a pair of copies of the remaining original one?

As this project goes on I m sure I ll have more questions. The clutch sounds like gears grinding if you push the pedal in all the way, the pto sounds like it has rocks in it. Other stuff will come up I m sure. It s had 54 years of hard abuse I know of.

As JS said, the one in the top picture. The other one looks like a 6v. I've yet to see a 12v Delco that the case was the same
diameter the full length, General rule of thumb on those is that they're smaller around the brushes and the 6v is the same diameter
the full length. I don't know that any particular model number or part number on the 12v will matter as long as it has the threaded
holes in the top for the saddle type regulator, Only other difference might be the position of the bolt for the tightener, but I
doubt many would be different if any,

Korves Oliver does not have the 660 tie rods new or used.

That top one was on there at one time. So that will probably be going back on, or one similar to it. I didn t know if there were different lengths or anything like that.

There are some same diameter 12v generators out there from the late letter series Deeres, they say 12v on the tag. But there is a 10 year gap between those and this one. Here is a picture of one that lives here.

There were several generators and regulators used on the 660. Early 660 tractors used a Delco generator #1100322, used
on both gas & Dsl. It had the regulator mounted on the generator.

Late tractors used #1100419 (30 amp.) with remote mounted regulator #118997, again both gas & dsl.

Single front wheel tractors with Power Steering had generators with long armature shaft for rear mounted pump, different
numbers.

I have the 12th 660 with the early generator setup and a late with the late setup. Interesting, the 660 Parts Book does
not show the late setup, however you can find the parts in the 550. 770 or 880 books, just follow the serial numbers.

Awesome. So based on that I have the correct generator for the tractor. Thank you. Also if it needs a remote mount regulator I ll use a solid state one.

The 660 is a pretty cool little tractor, I really like it even though it s going to take a lot of work. Luckily the engine, trans and hydraulics are in good working order. The rest shouldn t be too bad.

What is it that Ford uses, Autolite? Somebody said those are the same diameter the full length. The Lucas on my 500s are the same.
I've got a pile of those 12v Delcos around here that have come from auctions parts tractors and junk cars and all of those are
smaller around the brushes. I wonder if it has to do with the number of brushes whether they have a band around them or you get to
the brushes from the back?
