660 starter removal

can"t get the starter off of the tractor. seems as if the starter drive is stuck or something. pulled housing off and still can"t get the shaft out of the bell housing. tried to rock the tractor and can hear the spring in stater drive move. is there someway to get it loose or do I have to split the tractor.

any help/idea would be appreciated

Dunno.
Is the starter not working and that's why you are pulling it? If it does work, try putting the bolts back in and spinning it over with the start button and see what that does.

Wouldn't spin. clicked and tried to turn. can't turn shaft one way but will turn the other and clicks. thought about getting a strap wrench and seeing if it will turn backwards and release. believe the bendix somehow is engaged and will not release. had starter rebuilt last year but didn't replace bendix at that time. started good last week and.

If you engage the starter with a weak battery it will often do what you describe- the bendix engages the flywheel and then the engine doesn't start and kick the bendix back out. I would think if all you have remaining from the starter is the armature you ought to be able to wiggle it around and get the starter gears disengaged. Either that or put the starter back together (leave the brushes out and avoid the hassle of trying to get them back under the springs) and then pull start the tractor. That will kick the bendix back out.

That sounds about right. Tried to start and then kicked. Hope I can get the Better Half to pull me with the jeep.

Be careful trying to pull it you could end up braking all sorts of parts if that starter is locked into the flywheel ring gear. I would first off charge the battery and try that first because if the bendex gear is still in the flywheel teeth it should turn the engine over with a good hot battery unless you got the teeth some how locked between teeth and then you can jack up one wheel and put it in high gear and jirk the wheel back and forth a few time to unlock it

Full charged battery pack wouldn't turn it over and this is the jump box I use on diesel trucks. Got the Better Half to help me and we pulled it off. Stated and bendix disengaged. got the starter shaft and bendix off and found that the bendix had broken. Being lazy since had neck surgery and lost most of the strength in right arm took the starter to the rebuilder for him to put it back together and put a bendix on it.

Thanks for all the info and help. I definitely didn't want to park the tractor till i could split it.
