6605 3-point lift

Need help with info about a 12-13 year old John Deere 3-point lift. Wrote a long post & apparently got lost. This one is much shorter (wonder WHY?). Let me thank you in advance.....FredT

JD - thanks so much for getting back to me. The problem SEEMS to be that the 3-point lift will NOT lift any weight to speak of. The implement my buddy needs to use is a disc mower, and IIRC it weighs about 1100-1200 lbs. Well, THAT aint happenin.... The thing I can't figure out is that this SAME tractor has a bucket on the front & it will lift just about ANYTHING put into it..... AND, IIRC - the remotes seem to work OK. This is a puzzler. I'm wondering if the tractor has TWO hydraulic pumps??(or maybe THREE?).... I just paid Deere $237 to come out & look at it - and replace a small leaking O-ring. AND I was told by JD when I called back that it might take THOUSANDS to get it fixed. Since I'm on a fixed income THAT aint happening either. ANY help that I might get from this forum will literally be worth its weight in gold.

A few months back I posted on this forum about a PTO problem with this same tractor. About the 4th guy who responded told me I should check the wires going to the seat safety switch. And you know what? HE WAS EXACTLY RIGHT, so I KNOW there's some good experience here... I"m just asking for some of that experience again (and it's not even my tractor!!).... Once again "JD" - THANKS for your reply1 FredT

Problems such as this make me wonder why anyone wants electronically controlled functions.I hope the HCU is not faulty.
AL116824 Hitch Controller - HITCH CONTROLLER ADD 1,189.74 USD

I'd suggest to tee into RS cyl hose and check psi.

Then I'd check rockshaft position sensor.

Jim, Smit, & JD - I can't tell you how much I appreciate your replies. My friend does have a JD manual - of sorts - but I do NOT know if it is comprehensive enough to even identify the parts you mentioned ->> position sensor and hitch controller. I will have to get together with him on this and see what he has. I promise to post again & let you know what I found out. THANKS AGAIN for your help..... and if you can think of anything else, please let me know. THANKS !!........ FredT

Hey Guys - I meant to ask you SPECIFICALLY, but forgot to: Does this tractor have ONE hydraulic pump - or more than that? I realize that probably sounds like a foolish question, but after what I've seen on this rig I wouldn't be surprised at much. Thanks again! ... FredT

TxJimm & Smit - as I said before I appreciate so much your replies to my original question (In fact I appreciate ALL the replies), but I'm gonna do
something now that MIGHT be taken the wrong way, so please understand before I say anything that my intent is NOT to offend. I NEED to ask you a
question. I simply do not understand HOW the RS position sensor could be responsible for the "weak" 3-point lift. As best I can understand things,
the position sensor's job is to tell the "electronics" the position that the lift is in. And I just don't see how the weak condition of the lift
might be caused by a position sensor. Please know this: I would be THRILLED to find that the problem is a result of a relatively inexpensive position
switch INSTEAD of a $1200 hydraulic control unit ... but right now I'm thinking that I PROBABLY won't be that lucky. I am standing by - waiting for
your reply (and HOPING that you DO reply - as before ... you HAVE been helpful). And AGAIN I thank you ... FredT

(reply to post at 10:45:51 09/10/15)

My knowledge of the new fang-dangled electronically controlled functions is very limited plus I have no access to the appropriate tech manual so I rely on my experience from diagnosing mal-functions in the past IE I'm guessing.
Jim

Jim - I'm in the same boat with you. Have talked with at least one guy who used to work for Deere, and his OPINION is that one of the reasons they
went to electronic controls was that they wanted to cut back on the work being done on Deeres by third parties - in other words, by shops that are
NOT franchises & are not paying Deere any royalties or fees. I am NOT trying to "bad mouth" Deere here. Their approach MAY be sound business
practice - and I even own & operate a Deere myself(5410) - but I DO think that this tactic is likely to leave a bad taste in the mouth of anyone who
happens to come up "on the short end of the stick". My buddy - who I am TRYING to help - has very limited funds (don't we all) - and really cannot
afford to pay Deere(or anyone else) $1200 for a hydraulic control unit (HCU ... and I thank you ALL for the diagrams & sketches). I had a 1984
Chrysler sedan that was largely controlled by computers & brains, and when something went wrong the problem-solving quickly became a "crap shoot" in
which I guessed by replacing the parts that seemed most likely to have failed. I remember very well that the MAIN "brain" cost less than $300 ...
and so it bothers me some that the HCU on this tractor costs roughly FOUR TIMES as much (I believe the parts are comparable) . . . . I knew when
I posted my last question that the question MIGHT offend someone ... and I wanted more than anything else NOT to do that ... but since my knowledge
& experience on this subject are SO LIMITED I felt the need to explore just a little further. I figure that the most inexperienced beginner on this
forum MUST know more than I know about these matters, and so I am left with the task of asking questions & trying to get to the root of the problem.
Again, I thank ALL who have been so kind as to reply & share their knowledge & experiences. Four or five guys here have REALLY "stepped up to the
plate", and Dean(my buddy) & I appreciate that SO MUCH. I don't know if it's allowed by the forum rules, but I want you to have this:
"[email protected]" .... If, in the future, you can think of ANYTHING ELSE - please DO contact me. You (& others) have been very helpful & kind -
and I thank you. "May God Bless" ....... FredT

Is it a weak 3 point or is nothing happening at all. Since earlier on you said nothing is happening. If it is weak than yes you are probably unlucky and it is the pump, if not then it needs further diagnosis.

"Smit" - thanks again for your reply ... I DO APPRECIATE IT !! ... If I said nothing was happening, then I mis-spoke (I don't want to say I lied since
my intent is to NEVER deceive). In fact, when my buddy first came to me, NOTHING AT ALL was happening ... the lift would not go up & down at all -
even with NO WEIGHT on it. So I called a Deere technician to come & diagnose it for me (seemed like a reasonable approach), and he adjusted a little
screw that sits top dead center of what I believe he called a "stepping motor" - - and THEN the lift would go up & down. It was only later that we
found it would NOT pick up any weight. - - - NOW the lift WILL go up & down .... it just won't pick up any weight. One of my biggest fears is that
the problem MAY be in the HCU (hydraulic control unit). Thanks to one who replied to my original post, I know that the HCU costs almost 1200$$$; and
Lord knows - we can't stand THAT. As someone suggested, it would be a good idea to put a gauge on the hydraulic line & see how much force the pump is
generating ... just haven't done that yet. I wonder: Could John Deere possibly check that HCU for me ->> OFF the tractor?? I feel pretty sure that
IF I got a new one for diagnostic purposes - and it turned out the old one is good - they would NOT let me return the new HCU. Just speculating ....
Thanks again.

Yes i would talk to your local JD and see if they will take a look at it for you. I would also replace seals when you want to put it back together just to be safe. Good luck!
