67 3000 Utility Transmission Code G

My serial number indicates a 1967 Utility 3000, gas with 540 single clutch PTO and a transmission code of "G". The code sheet I have does not have a "G" on it. Can anyone advise what transmission this is?

Thank you!

G is the 4x4 speed manual reversing transmission used on the first couple of years on the 3 cylinder industrial and utility tractors. My 1966 4500 industrial tractor had one. This transmission was replaced with the 6x4 transmission in about 1968.

The others are correct. The G transmission code is for the 4x4 manual reversing transmission which was only made from 1/1/65-3/31/68. When they switched to the newer style sheet metal with the smooth hood sides an inset grill on 4/1/68 they also changed the manual reversing transmission from 4x4 to 6x4 and changed the code letter from G to H. They changed a number of things on that date (April fools day 1968).

Thank you for this explanation. I guess this is a bit disappointing but probably of little actual consequence while using the tractor. I'm trying to understand what "manual reversing" means. Isn't this what all clutch operated transmissions have?

The 4x4 Manual reversing transmission has two shifters. The main, taller shifter has an H shift pattern with the two forward positions being 1st and 2nd forward gears and the two rearward positions being 1st and 2nd reverse gears, so you could shift directly between forward and reverse and back again by simply moving the shifter forward and backward in a straight line. The second shorter shifter switched between high and low ranges for you to have a total of 4 forward and 4 reverse gears. The standard manual transmissions (4, 6 & 8 speed transmissions) had only 1 reverse gear on the main shifter so you did not have a straight line shift between reverse and most of the forward speeds. The 4 speed manual only had one shifter so it only had one reverse gear, and the 6 & 8 speed transmissions had the high/low secondary shifter so they had 2 reverse gears, but only 1 in each range. When they added the 3rd forward gear to the manual reversing transmission on 4/1/68 they did not add an extra reverse, as they added the higher speed third/sixth gears to give a higher speed for on-road travel and did not think anyone wanted or needed to go that fast in reverse.

Sean, thank you for digging this up. It actually makes me happy. I thought having an 8 speed tractor would be cool, but I've yet to take it out on the highway, so going faster is of little concern. What I do often though is shuttle back and forth with the FEL
and having reverse straight back from a low 1st or a bit faster 2nd is of much greater value to me. I feel lucky! I wanted the SOS transmission but the cost was too great, so this is a very good alternative.
