686 diesel engine model

How can I tell what engine I have? I recently bought a Farmall 686 tractor with diesel engine. The owners manual I got with it has conflicting information. One place the former owner wrote "310 engine" and the owners Manual I got refers to "312 engine". The tractor SN is 2450176 U11935 and the engine SN is 12008775.

Hi to find the IH engine model and serial location see the photo below of location chart for the different types of IH engines.

If you have 2 oil filters upside down on the right side it's a 312. If you have 1 filter laying down it's a 310
