6speed vs 8 speed engine

I am a little confused about the difference between the 6 speed and 8 speed engines in a 930. Will a 6 speed engine work in front of the 8 speed transmission? What are the differences?

no the bellhousing is diffrent i think

The 6 speeds were a wet clutch, so you have an issue with that as the 8 speeds were a dry clutch.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for a 8 speed gas or propane engine and cannot find one. I can find plenty of 6 speeds. I have always heard they couldn't be interchanged, but did not know the reason until now.

mEl, aren't the 6 speeds chain drive and dual range 8 speeds all gear rear ends too?
