I'm having a senior moment. 6 volt Farmall BN with distributor, which side if the coil do I wire to the switch? Neg or Pos? Battery is pos ground.
Thanks
Dave

Rusty is correct. Think of what battery terminal the points connect the distributor side of the coil to when they close and make contact to the distributor housing, to the engine, back to the clutch torque tube, to the end of the cable that is connected to the POSITIVE battery terminal which in this case we call positive ground. Then to create a circuit to operate the coil keeping the polarity correct the opposite terminal which will be the negative terminal of the coil is what has to be fed from the ignition switch.

Coil polarity should match battery polarity.

On a battery ignition system, one of the coils primary terminals receives voltage when starting and running, and the other primary terminal goes to the points, through the distributor. This is the one that should match the battery polarity.

In other words if your battery is positive ground, the coils positive primary terminal should be going to the points.

The system will actually produce a spark if wired in reverse, just not as good of a spark compared to wired correctly.

Rusty is right, the easy way to remember is the distributor is always ground. Pos or neg ground, the distributor gets the ground wire, just like the battery.
