6v generator rebuild

The bearing failed on my generator and there was minor rubbing between the two surfaces inside---enough to rub off the brown glaze that coats the components. What is this glaze for, and can I buy some somewhere to re-coat before putting it back together.

Thanks for the help...

I guess you are talking about the shiny laminations on the armature? If so, that is likely of no concern....surface rust will brown them shortly. What is likely of greater concern is what it was rubbing against & whether those field coils were damaged.

Are the field coils attached to the inside of the case? If so they were rubbed a bit by the part shown in the picture (the Armature?) No serious damage to either surface---just the painted-on glaze being worn off.

Yes, field coils surround the iron pole pieces. If rubbing was only on iron pole pieces & not on insulated field coils, then I would put it back together and run it.

Okay---thanks for that information. The wrapped coils were not touched, just the solid metal plates (iron pole pieces?)...
