6v generator

My 6v generator only has a single post. What have i got here? Most of the manuals seem to discuss multi-post generators.Even my Ford parts book only shows multi-post.Its working fine, just for my own info.My motor is a front distrib. 8n in a 9n tractor.

ou have a 9N single terminal, three brush generator, most likely. On the rear there should be either a screw or a slider-button by which the charging current is adjusted, HI/LO. Since there is no voltage regulator on these, just a simple round can cut out, this adjustment allows you, the operator to perform a similar function.

(quoted from post at 13:49:49 12/31/10) Thats what I have. The adjustment is like you describe. Were they the first generation, then they went to the multi terminal type?
ould just about write a book on 'N" generators. There have been more than a half dozen generators for "N" tractors and even some of those have variations within a model. A gross summary is that they started out with a two terminal/two brush unit with a VR in 1939, then went to one terminal/3 brush (numerous models of these generators) using a simple cut out, then with 8N, a 3 terminal/3 brush with VR, then 3 terminal/2 brush with VR (couple of models, here).

David.......you do know that 8N engines fit 9N tractors, don't you?

Used Engines are sold without electrics and carbs. When swapping engines, you usually use the original "auxillary's". Therefore, yer 8N engine is mounted with the 9N's 3rd-brush 1-terminal 6V genny with a 2-terminal roundcan cut-out on the steering column under the battery tray.

Using the later 8N's 3-terminal 6V genny would require figgerin' out how to mount the 4-terminal squarecan voltage regulator (on 8N's it is underneath the oil pressure gauge) and RE-WIRING the 9N tractor electrical stuff. This is NOT for neubie shadetree electricians. .......respectfully, Dell
