Hi, guys found a good deal on a 25a john deere flail mower/ stalk chopper. was wondering if this would be too much for my 49 8n. it is a 7ft mower. thinking I could use it for brush hog finish mower. thanks brian

Brian.......nope, yer 26hp PTO ain't gotta enuff cajones for flail mower. I believe as a rule of thumb, 10hp per foot of flail mower. .......Dell

While I agree that an N just doesn't have the umph for a flail mower, I don't think you need 10 h.p. per foot. I've run 6' flail choppers with a Ford 850 and 3000. Right now I have a 7' that I run with my 4600. (52 h.p. - handles it nicely) With the choppers, you need enough power to pull a wagon (I have 20') and blow the grass into the wagon, as well as run the flail. If I had a 15' (6 row) stalk chopper, I wouldn't hesitate to pull it with one of my 85 h.p. tractors. I'd say 6 h.p./ft. would be about right for a minimum.
