Starting to put engine back together. ( continental DS6202 ).My question is should i use gasket sealant on head gasket or not. if so what type .The gasket is a metal gasket with cooper around water ports.

Was it part of the original engine build? No.

Should it be needed with modern gaskets? No

But... if your engine is in a poor state you may need some extra protection against leaks. Proper mechanical refurbishment is better than hiding
faults. Sealants may not fill in gaps adequately, if the head and block faces are not flat.

Having the head and deck skimmed, if necessary, is the better way. Then, should sealants be necessary? No.🙂

Following the gasket manufacturer?s instruction is the best advice.

First, check and see if it says anywhere, do not use a sealer. If not, you can use one. I used Hi Tack. Do not use silicone!
