7040 Range Transmission Shifting

My range transmission has been getting progressively harder to shift into fast - slow - park. I pulled the floor plate thinking adjust cable: Stud cable connects to was extremely loose and sloppy. Tightened stud and adjusted cable per service manual. Tried shifting 3/4 times without starting tractor: no problem. Started tractor and tried shifting and feels life something "mechanical" is preventing it from going into any selection. Have scanned service manual and operators manual and cannot find this problem addressed anywhere. Any suggestions?

The short easy answer is, you probably need two new cables, or the small cable for sure. The cables wear on the inside and become stiff and drag and take higher effort to make them work. The small cable doesn't allow the shift lever to move over to the High-Neutral-Low gate, so you are stuck between the two rails and nothing can happen, no matter how hard you yank on the shift lever. With the floor out of the cab, disconnect the small cable and shift the console lever back and forth from high to low and if it works OK, then replace the small cable. Be gentle replacing it because if you get rough and put ANY kind of kink in it, it will not work right. There is also the chance that the internal shifting lugs are worn from thousands of times of in and out of Park. Deal with that after you get the cable replaced if you have to.

Thanks Dr

I am a finesse mechanic not a bigger hammer type. I love my old tractors (14 ACs last count) and try to take care of issues before things get too bad. I always
appreciate you common sense technical advice offered with a great, helpful attitude. Don't see a lot of that attitude now days. When I get a chance, I'll take a harder
look at the cables, maybe just change them out for the heck of it. If that doesn't work out, I'll post again. Have a great day. Carl

I had a 7045 that had the cable slip out of the clamp or the holding bracket. It would shift maybe 1 out of 10 times until one day it just decided no more!
