What are the pros and cons of the IH 706? I seen one for sale, it looks about the size tractor I am looking for, but I don"t know much about them.

Gas or diesel?. If diesel. 281 or German engine? Biggest drawback to the gas models was fuel consumption, they liked their fuel. IMO, the 281 was underpowered & I never cared for the glow plug start in cold weather. The German diesel was the best engine in the 706s IMO but they can be on the spendy side to repair. We have a 706 German that we use mainly as an auger tractor. The other day it started right up at 2º with just a light snort of either. We had a couple engines that wouldn't start thought they had been plugged in all night.

The other main complaint most people have with the 0-6 series tractors is that they can be hard shifting. Especially if the likage gets worn or out of adjustment. Lot of it was due to the fact that the range lever was a straight thru H,L, N, R. IH improved the shifting on the 56 series tractors y changing the range shift to an h pattern with High being the top of the 1 of the h, N being at the in the middle of the 1 at the - of the h, Low being at the bottom of the 1 and Rev being at the lower right of the h.

The 706s are a handy size tractor for smaller farms, doing hay work & for odd jobs. Easier to get on & off than an 806 or 1206 & more nimble.

Back in the day, guys that had the 7s usually pulled 4 x16" or 5x14" plows, 13-15' discs & 13-15' field cultivators. They would habdle a 4 or 6 row wide planter & a couple guys even pulled 8 row x 30" planters with them and 4 or 6 row row crop cultivators.

I have a 706 and I like it for baling hay. It also makes a good loader tractor. It is a little hard to shift but you get used to it.I traded it for work I did with my td9 crawler. Worked about 8 hours and the guy did not have money to pay, so he said that he would trade the tractor for the crawler work. I had a loader on it too. I put a 6 cylinder perkens diesel in the crawler. the old engine was shot, so I took the engine out of my old 410 massey combine. with a lot of machine work it really works good.

We have a 706D 282 engine some complain but I have never had a problem with it keep all glow plugs working and it starts no matter what the temp is shifting is an issue but there is an up grade kit for the top plate and new bushings. we pull 4 16s with ease it is good cheap HP would not like it for loader work though.

I have a 706 gasser and frankly I love it for loader work. Just one lever to move to shift from forward to reverse in a straight line, with no extra movements. Yeah, it's touchy. But it's a 40+ year old tractor and I'm a lot touchier than I used to be!!

I have no weights on rears or fluid and no chains, but have had no problems with it this winter -- my first with it.

Yeah it uses some fuel, but it gets the job done. My yard looks like a parking lot!

Seems to be a solid tractor.

I have an 806D with a 2355 loader on it. I get by with it but it's not my main loader tractor. Bought the outfit for the tractor, son & I also have a 1206 besides the 706, and was going to sell the loader but found there's times that having a second loader arouns was handy.

A tractor with a power shift tranny or shuttle shift makes a much better loader tractor if you're going to be using the tractor mainly for that purpose but they cost more $$. JMO
