Most times the starter button on my 706 gas works fine and it starts instantly. Other times, nothing
when I hit the starter button? Where is my most likely cause or culprit?

If it has the typical IH starter button with a rubber boot over it, they often get dirty inside and don't always make contact. IRRITATING as &%# when they do that!

Besides checking/cleaning up the battery terminals and cables, that's where I'd start.

I agree with Rich. Its the starter switch/solenoid or starter or a weak/loose/resistive battery cable or connection or GROUND...I would remove clean check n wire brush each and every battery and starter and especially GROIUND connection. If thats NOT the problem the starter solenoid or its wiring or connections or activation switch/circuit may be at fault. My first best guess is the solenoid contacts are burned/pitted/corroded and thats cheaper than a starter BUT the activation key position or start switch may not be sending a good enough voltage signal down to the solenoids small activation terminal.

Do you hear a click down at the starter when it DOES NOT crank? If so the button is fine, the trouble is in the solenoid. On Delco starters the battery contact bolt wears away on one side, so the contact washer can't make the connection between the two heavy bolts. That bolt has a square shoulder like a carriage bolt, I've removed the wires, then the first nut backed off about 1/2 inch. Now push the bolt in and turn it 1/2 and pull back out, tighten the nut and replace all wires. Solenoid will be like new again IF the bolt is worn as the washer only strikes one side of the bolt head during cranking. The starter heavy bolt seldom wears away, but over time the battery bolt head wears the most.

My 826 does that from time to time. With your thumb still pressing the starter button, just wiggle it around a bit.

All good things to do. Like Dieseltech said if it just clicks at the starter when you push the button then expect the solenoid is bad. If nothing then connection or Checking and cleaning connections and battery voltage.
