706 steering

I am going to go look at a gas 706 this afternoon after I get some straw baled and hauled . The guy that has it says it has to run 30 seconds or a minute before the steering works. Could this be a dirty filter or is this an indication of a much larger problem that I should run from? The old tractor is priced right [$1500] but needs back tires. Thanks for your help. Lee

Common problem.Change filter first. If that doesnt help ,dump in 5 gallons hydralic fluid. There is an oring that is sucking air. The oil sumerges the oring,'stops' the air.The oring is in the MCV (power steering) pump supply.

Geez, for $1500 how can you go wrong? There are a lot more larger issues than a leaky power steering that will cost a lot more to fix, such as engine, TA, etc..

I do believe that the steering problem is caused by a leak in the lines or in the hand pump itself, which is allowing air into the system and the hand pump is losing prime... Might be way off base on that. Just a guess.

When you get there it'll probably be pretty obvious what's wrong because there will be oil all over.

deltared has good advice. another possibility is if the hand pump that the steering wheel turns) leaks, you need to wait for the mcv pump to purge the air. this will be indicated by oil dripping down the middle of the instrument console.

like the other fella said, how can you go wrong for 1500 unless they just lifted it out of a lake?

Yep, what DeltaRed said. Filter change, then overfill 5 gal of hytran.
Thats a good price. Even with a $1000 set of tires, that's a cheap and useful machine.
I think you may need to check the older posts about the correct grade of fuel to use so you don't have problems down the road.

I hate to say it but I guess I missed it. I got through with my hay about 3:30 and called to see if anyone would be home for me to look at it. The lady said someone had looked at it this a.m. and said he would return at 5 to get it. I tried to call at 7:30 to see if he came but got no answer. I would have been money ahead to have let the hay go and went and got the tractor. I had 2 fields to square bale and 1 to roll with rain in the forecast for the p.m. I just cant take myself away under those conditions , guess it was how I was raised. Anyway thanks to all and if I call in the a.m. and get lucky I will let you guys know.
