706 trans

i lost forward gears in my 706, thinking it was in the linkage i pulled the cover off the trany to rebuild the parts and found that the shaft that the fork that shifts from low range to high rides on had come out and slid back into the rear end and the fork fell off, when i was fishing the fork back up i bumped the shaft and it went into the casting of the rear end even further, now the question is , can i take the plate off thats on the back of the rear end and see all the way to the front to try and push the shaft back forward with a piece of round stock or is there to much stuff in the way? or do i have to take the whole top of the rear end off and access it from the top. i have a cab on it so i would have to remove that first before lifting the top cover of the rear end . anybody do this that has any pointers would be greatfully appreciated thanks

A neodymium rare earth magnet epoxied to a stick might pull it back if it slides easily and is still in the bearing. Jim
Computer HDD have those magnets, don't get them together on opposite sides of skin! They can be broken int smaller pieces, but not sawn. Jim

With the third link plate off you can see the hole or the shaft whichever is there and could push it back into place from there. You can either fish for it from through that hole with a stout magnet or if you remove the hydraulic pump you can fish through there for it in the bottom. Would be much easier than removing the top lid. You will need to drain the oil out first for the pump removal. After you retrive the shaft If you use a piece of heater hose or the such the shaft can be put back in that way and pushed far enough you can hold it with a vise grip till you get the hose off or put the bolt holding the fork on till you get it back into the fork. When we change my 806 over to a 56 series shifting we changed the shaft this way without dropping it.

i tried the magnet trick first with no luck, took the inspection plate off the back of the rear end and was able to see to the front, used about a 5 ft piece of 5/8 round stock and was able to move it far enough back in to get ahold of it from the tranny side again , thanks for the help guys
