706 won't move

I recently got a 706 that has been sitting for about 20 years. I have it running, but it won't move. It tries to move a little, but won't go. Any ideas what to try? Hydraulics and power steering work. I have changed the trans oil and filter.

With out more info i would be guessing big time . as it maybe the center of the clutch is out , maybe the input shaft is twisted off , may be a stuck valve in the MCV or a blowen gskt. Maybe the cross in the diff is toast , With out seeing the tractor and checking myself i am guessing .

Neighbor had a grain truck like that. Turned out to be a big nest of some sort in the bell housing keeping the clutch from gripping. He had to split it to get everything out.

Does everything else work (two point/three point, PTO, remotes, etc)? Was it indoor?

Look into any and all inspection ports and see if tranny gears move in Neutral and when put in gear. If they do, the failure is in the finals or differential, if not it is in the Clutch/TA/Hydro controls for MCV. Jim

I haven't done much investegating yet. It makes me think maybe a stuck valve or bad ta. I wanted some ideas where to start.

Oh heck,

You're finding out why it was parked in the first place.

Chances are pretty darned high that the clutch is fried.

I bought a 706 a few years ago that would not move. The owner was sure that the TA was out. I bought it, tapped the dump valve with a hammer, it went back in and worked fine.

The previous owner was not wrong. If the tractor will not pull with the dump valve pulled back the sprag is out on the low side.

You may still have the hydraulic side of the low side of the TA but it is not designed to pull the main load. It is there to keep the tractor from free wheeling in the low side like the mechanical TAs do. The low side hydraulic clutch plates can help stabilize the sprag and allow it to pull a load but you living on borrowed time when you get to that point.
