715 controls configuration

thought I posted this question yesterday but maybe it vanished in the rhubarbs so I'll try again:

Cab control configuration in my 715 op manual does not match control configuration in my recently purchased 1975 715 (corn & soybean special). Specifically, what the book says should be the propulsion drive (arm off the steering column) is actually the reel lift control. And the pedal (far right) that the op. manual says should be the reel lift does. . .what? Purchasing document says the combine is hydrostatic but so far I see no way to vary speed except to change gears (1-3). Any help for the Newbie appreciated!

if you have a 1-2-3-R in an H pattern on the panel on the right side of the seat, it would be a gear drive. you change speeds within each gear by the pedal on the floor to the right with the heavy duty nubs on it. the pedal changes a variator on the belt drive to change speeds. only move the pedal with the engine running. hth, my book and the combine are outside.

to: formerly NY Bill,

Any suggestions for how I go about getting the right operator's manual--one that includes the kind of drive i have?

the cover and first 4 pages are gone off mine, so i can't give you the manual#. i would have thought that the manual would have covered both hydros and belt drive models.
i'd post a request for a manual on the combine forum here, and on the red power forum. i'm sure that someone will have a lead on one. there's nothing on ebay right now but most manuals show up there from time to time.

When functioning properly should the variable speed control offer an almost infinite range of speeds within the gear or is a bit more of an off/on, high range/low range kind of thing? As is, the pedal & linkage is pretty sticky so it is clunky and involves what seems like too much stomping to get it into: higher ranges, neutral and slower ranges. I can tell what stage I'm at by the whine of the hydraulics but when actually combining I doubt I'll hear that. Just wondering what it should work like. . .

You can get a new owners manual for your 715 at your local Case-IH dealer but it wont be cheap.Keep watching ebay for a used one.

A belt drive has a clutch and uses a variable speed belt to change speeds in each gear.A hydro has an inching pedal and uses oil flow to change speeds in each gear. Both have a 3 speed trans.
