(quoted from post at 20:20:41 04/03/20) What is the difference between a black dash and a green dash 720 diesel?

Thanks in advance,

"What is the difference between a black dash and a green dash 720 diesel?"

Someone painted the black dash the incorrect color.

The black dash 720 began at SN 7214900. The list of improvements is rather long to list here but you can find them in a GM article from the June 2014 issue.

Here are some of the changes listed from that article:

* a mounting step was now standard equipment
* a new muffler with stainless steel internal parts
* sealed beam headlights
* improved parts in the clutch and pulley brake
* power steering improvements
* new plastic steering wheel
* power adjusted rear wheels for row crop tractors (optional)
* diesel engine improvements to include revised crankshaft, flywheel and left side main bearing
* new engine cylinder head did away with copper injector sleeves
* new pistons with newer stye keystone rings
* starting engine improvements to include, larger main bearings, improved valve train, greater oil capacity, these starting engines received individual serial numbers
* new transmission with higher speeds
* electric starting beginning with SN 7222600
* new anti -reversion cam shaft at SN 7223364

I think there was a change in the cam shaft so that if you lugged it down to it's last breath the engine could not start running backwards. Dad talked about doing that to his 70 diesel once. Oil started coming out the air stack and when he engaged the clutch the tractor backed up instead of going forward. Shut it down and restarted with no problems or damage. I have read where often when they do that the push rods get bent up. Tom

I have a green dash 720 and in the 4 years I've had it I've had to do all the black dash improvements to it. They are definitely all improvements. The way the cam idler gear is mounted, how the cam triggers the injection pumps, the way the crankshaft endplay is set.
