Is there an electronic ignition conversion available for the v4 pony engine didstributors? Or has anone ever adapted their own? Thanks!

Iv'e seen the 4 coil trick. If its done nicely they can all fit under the hood. Maybe I'll try that if nothing else. I don't mind farmerizations as long as they are nicel done!

Surely someone has figured out a way to put the new style electronic solid state ignition on these things which eliminates points and condensors.

I do not know if there were four coils on this beast but I do know it was a none starter at the auction. Why cobble something up when original replacement parts are readily available.

(quoted from post at 18:44:49 06/30/12) It can be done with four car coils and it works well but such "farmerization" is frowned upon here.

Well, 4 coils does not make it electronic. The electronic part of the conversion just replaces the breaker points, which seem to work pretty well in the old Wico distributor. But if you tried it, the trick would be to correctly mount the two separate pick ups on the breaker plate, or manufacture/modify a four cylinder pick up to correctly hit each coil in order. You'd need a distributor cap that would fit flat behind the door, maybe like a flat top cap used on some marine applications, and still it may not fit. If you don't use a distributor, you'd have the cost of two, two cylinder electronic kits, and then four coils, or a pair of bifilar wound coil packs, sort of like the two in a unit coils used on a Lincoln LS V-8. At that cost, you would have exceeded the $300 for a complete brand new out of the box Wico distributor, which if you install that and my oil pressure coil protection circuit, I think would be factory correct and work just fine. Mine has been running great for just over ten years now. Noticed the dash light on mine a few weeks ago glowing a day after I used it. I think I might have bumped the switch when I was getting off. Turned it off and came back yesterday and it fired right up. Why bother modifying with performance of the original components like that, unless you can make it look real tight. IMHO.

I agree. I had a 720D years ago and kept going through coils that
cost Deerely so I did the four coil thing with good results. I didn't
have the information that is available here now back then. I don't
know what would be gained with electronic ignition if it only
replaces the points. They were not the weak link in my experience.

Heres what I did with mine after going through a new set of coils when the boys put 12 volts jump start to it after sitting for the winter and the battery going down. Haven't had a problem starting it since.

FIT,What is an "oil pressure coil protection circuit"? I agree, the weak spot is the coils. I don't know if I'll replace the original coils again or if I'll go with the automotive coil deal.
