73 656 Diesel Starting problem

I have a 1973 656 with D282 diesel.

When I press the start button to turn over the engine, the starter makes a noise and it won't turn over the engine. This was
happening rarely and now more often than not. If I repeatedly press the start button, it will eventually engage and when it
does, the starter turns the engine over easily. I thought it could have been a solenoid problem, so I replace it and still the
same noise and result. The batteries are fine, 2 12v batteries hooked in parallel. The noise is not a clicking noise, but
rather more like a vibrating noise, almost like a sheet sander. (I have recorded the noise, but I don't see where I can upload
the recording here.)

What's my next place to look? Bendix? Or starter rebuilt?

Thanks in advance for your help!

probably solenoid, there is a washer that comes in contact with the heads of the two large brass bolts on the sol.,it & the bolt heads get pitted pretty bad. my dad used to flip the washer over& resurface the brass bolts. good luck !

It sounds to me like the overrunning clutch in the starterdrive[bendix]is worn out.Pull the starter, change the starter drive and you should be fine.

He states the solenoid has been replaced with no improvement. Sounds more like a dead spot in the starter. After only replacing one starter in 30 years as an adult in the last 3 years I've suddenly had to replace 4 - one that just cooked itself and three that developed the same problem described above. We have a local rebuilder but I've learned the hard way that its a lot cheaper to just buy a new starter then pay him to "work" on it then buy a new starter.

cushman,

I appreciate the help! I was afraid that I was going to need to pull the starter. I'll look into that next.
