730 D pto noise

I was running a haybine yesterday and there is a "clunking" noise only when the pto is engaged. There are no noises in the back where the powershaft comes out. Other than the noise, the pto works fine. It seems to be up front on the right side by the clutch??? When the pto is not engaged, there is no noise. When the pto is engaged with nothing attached there is no noise. The noise gets alot worse when going around the corner to the right. The noise is there when the clutch is engaged or not. The flywheel is not loose, and there seems to be no other problems with the tractor. All fluids have been checked and are ok.
Has anybody had any experience with this before? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a bad gear with a cracked tooth.Just need to start tear down from the rear and keep going till you find it. could be the beveled gears in the middle of the trany. Good luck.

Yea unfortunately that's what it SOUNDS like. Not sure though. I was hoping somebody has had this happen before and could give me more specifics on where to start looking.

my 720D makes a similar noise when I am baling if turning corners. I was told it is normal. It is the wind up and slow down from the knuckles. I was quite worried at first. Straight it doesn't do it. They are kind of noisy any way do to all the moving parts and angle drive.

It sounds to me the thrust washers are worn on
the bevel gears of the PTO.. Turning allow"s
back lash in the gears, Hence Noise....

Replace the thrust washers it will only get
worse.

If your using a newer J/D balers with the
special Hitch, you"ll have NO noise.

Don't you have to move the hitch over and back to a certain measurement to help prevent drive line problems ?

I purchased the tractor this winter and this is the first time I used the pto. The manual says drawbar straight back from the pto 14 inches. It still has the noise.

I have pinpointed the noise, and it is not in the clutch housing. It"s under the reduction gear cover. Looking at the service and parts manuals, I see the bevel gears inside the main housing of the tractor. If the bevel gears are stripped or chewed up, there is no way I can take on that project. I"ll have to take it to a professional. It would be too hard to handle taking the back end off the tractor because I don"t have the equipment to handle that much weight in my shop.

However, from looking at the service manual it looks like under the reduction gear cover there is a pto sliding gear, lock washer, and a bearing on the outside of the main tractor housing that I probably could get to.

RLA, can I get to that washer your talking about by removing the reduction gear cover only? Or does the rear end of the tractor have to come off?
