730 D Transfer Pump

I purchased a 730D this winter. I have used it to plow and disk a couple of acres on my hobby farm this spring. So far I think the tractor is in decent condition as I haven't run into any major problems YET. However, I did have a fuel issue while pulling my disk. Once the fuel tank got down below half the tractor seemed to starve for fuel. I checked the pressure on the primary fuel filter and was only getting about 2# at idle. Pulled off the pump cover and the relief valve piston had 4 shimms behind the spring. Took the shims out and it increased the pressure to 10 PSI at idle and 40PSI for for some reason and now the tractor seems to pull well. Pressure is now around 10# at idle and goes up to 40# at 1100 RPM's. But on the gauge the needle bounces badly. My question is should it be a more stable pressure? Is the pump working correctly?

There is a stand pipe in the fuel tank that will break-off and cause loss of power and a flutter sound. It is on the fuel adapter that screws into the tank.

The pump will surge some but some can be eliminated by surfacing the outside pump plate.

It should be making around 50 PSI. You may have to add a shim to the bleed valve on top of the rack cover. (looks like a large hex nut)

It has been my experience that the more pressure you have the better it runs. This only applies to late 720 and 730 tractors. It will make more power and smoke less.
