does anyone know if a 24-volt generator off a 4020 will work on a 730 jd 24-volt system

They are the same electrically (armature and field coils are the same part number) but, IIRC, the ''ear'' where the (tensioner) strap attaches is on the opposite side, the drive end ''frame'' would have to be swapped.

1960 730 diesel ES Barn find. found crankcase to be over full to the point of having oil run out of case while removing dip stick. I believe it has diesel fuel leaked into case. Been sitting in barn since 2016. I also found the speed control lever to be left about halfway between off and wide open. The cut off valve on bowl under tank seems to be off, but have not really tried to turn it. It will be here today and I will begin to drain crankcase.

I would like to know if anyone has seen this before and what are your comments on this. How could this have happened?

It was driven in the barn by owner before he died in 2016. It was a very good running machine at that time the family says.
