7520 John Deere

I bought a 7520 John Deere this last winter, and am just getting around to trying to get it to start. The guy who had it retired last year, and didn't use it the last two years he did farm. I've never been around one of these 7520's before, but am familiar with the 4020's, 3020's. This tractor was used to pull a toolbar to summerfallow with, and that's it. As of right now the pto lever is seized, and the hand throttle was as well, with the little rod and ball setup busted. I've got the throttle linkage moving somewhat, although still tight. It was setup with only one 12 volt battery in a homemade tray right beside the starter. I've put a new battery in it, changed the fuel filters and bled the air out of the injector lines. The fuel in it seems good yet. I can turn it over, but it seems slow to me and wears down the battery very quickly. It only smokes, but never has fired for me yet. Starting fluid doesn't help. Tempatures have been in the 50's for about a week now here. The previous owner had mentioned it being hard to start, and him using starting fluid most of the time to get it to go. It has a 12 volt nippendectio? starter. I am curious to know if I need to put more then one battery together here to get it to start. How many did it use from the factory? I am hoping to get it to go by spinning it over a little quicker if that's what it needs.

On our 75 you have to crank it for a good 2-3minutes before it will start thinking about firing. Black smoke pilling out the whole time. Once it goes it's such a great roar and the smoke clears up straight away. Great machines but they aren't great at starting.

7520 came from factory with two 900 CCA 6 volt batteries attached in series. It might help engine cranking speed to install and utilize a hyd pump destroking screw.

The 7520 shares some parts with a 4620. As previously stated the pump destroker and more battery is required. Are you cranking it with the clutch pedal all the way down? What is the part number on the Denso starter? There is a 5Kw Denso part number RE528619 but for reasons unknown most folk purchase a 4Kw or smaller. There is a mighty 44MT Delco Remy that will wail most farm and truck engines over. A minimum battery is a group 31 with at least 1000CCA, better two of them. 2/00 cables with crimped on connectors . The negative return cable should be connected under a starter mounting bolt. Just the HD cables and properly connecting the neg will usually work wonders. Injection pump timing could be suspect. A set of new injectors are pretty reasonable now. Just have the pop pressure checked before installation. Valve lash should be checked.

It could be the starter is dragging a bit,, clean all the battery cables good, if they look poor change them out, jumping with another battery and jump cables is near like having a second battery, and rocking the steering wheel will make it turn over faster (it unloads the main pump pressure)and they will deal with some ether okay,,,pump the primer pump till you are sure you have fuel to the injector pump too....
