I think someone that had a 7020 bought a 8430, and 7520 owners aimed at the 8630.

7020, 8430/40/50,8560 are powered with the largest row crop tractor engine available at the time, or the smallest chopper engine. So at this level, customers almost always had the choice between 2wd and 4wd. Yes the 8430 was introduced before the 4840, as Deere decided not to do a 4830 to compete with MF or Allis on the power race.

The large models always had the big block, almost always same engine than the biggest choppers.

Our first 4WD was an 8630.We pulled an 8 bottom plow and bigger field cultivator but it was plagued with updates but had a nice cab and was much more tractor than the 4630.I cant remember what original cost was but I do know the comparable Steiger and Versatile were better tractors. The IH,Ford,AC.Massey, and Oliver were all problematic. We then got a 8640 a little better but then went to a CIH 9280 [Red Steiger] and it is still running today with no transmission or engine problems. JD should have hired Jon Kinzebau to help them design the first 4WD as his conversions became very popular.

Steiger and Versatile were clean sheet designs whereas JD and the other majors insisted on components that already existed in their respective systems. The Steiger and Versatile may have been better products but JD probably made more off of their 4WD's as they had economy of scale working for them. Just like the 2 cylinders it is all water under the bridge today.

When the 8430 was introduced the 6030 was still being built plus the 466 engine came out with the 8430. Despite some of the fuss
kicked up on the web there were guys who got along fairly well with the 30 series 4WD's. I talked with a fellow around ten years
back who was having a retirement auction. He felt that having older help who would watch gauges and use common sense made his 8630
last a long time with minimal upkeep. Lots of 30 series 4WD's dragged manure buggies around on large dairies from the 1990's
through the 2010's when rising milk prices allowed for replacements. Steiger had the edge in terms of engine power and torque plus
reliable simple transmissions but were not perfect. JD had the better cab, clutch, transmission, and hydraulics.
