Has anyone ever had the main casing bust that that the steering box sits on. My goodness that thing busted in 4 different spots and I guess finding one much less welding will be a chore. I will have to split the tractor and my goodness there is no telling what is inside there. I'm afraid to move it to the shop so it don't hit the ground. Is this a common flaw from ford or what. That piece must weigh 500 lbs and is what holds the tractor together.

Did it just break, or did the steering box come loose first? The steering box came loose on mine, but I caught it soon enough - got it tightened back down before anything happened.

Does the tractor have a loader on it? If it has there's your problem. Loader mountings get loose and that puts tremendous stress on the castings .I have seen 2 engine blocks busted with front end loaders on Fords. If it doesn't have a loader you may have an internal problem like a bad bearing that put a stress load on the casting. Ford had very good castings, they didn't give very much trouble. It probably could be welded, but I'd opt for a used housing.

Roll over, tree fall, loader, side mount boom mower (especially if it hits a bridge when loaded on a trailer). Any of these can break a casting. As to routine breakage, I've never seen it on a Ford of that series.

They weld nice with 99pct nickel or 50/50 Nickel Manganese, especially if you prehead. But, as others have said, the quick and easy fix is to get a used casting. They are plentiful and relatively affordable.

The tractor had a loader on it when I got it and that prior owner kept it. A boy that works for me was pulling the NH617 which is the heaviest one disc mower I believe was ever made. We were mowing a new farm and he found a sinkhole, thats when the casing busted. A friend of mine came got it with the wrecker and it will be a winter project. I hooked the mower back to the 4020. I really like that tractor so it will be fixed. Thanks for the info. The boy that helps me is a heck of a welder so I'm sure he will weld it right. Thanks for the welding rod info.

Don't even bother welding it. Get a transmission. It shouldn't be hard to find one. Of the failings on those tractors, the transmission is not one of the common ones... so generally there should be more transmissions available than engines....
